Violet Travilla: Her Faith

When we first meet Vi, she is an ordinary 14-year-old girl--one of six children growing up in a loving Christian family on a southern plantation in the late 1800s.

Although Vi has grown up all her life in a Christian home, her faith is still young and growing. Many adventures and life experiences yet await her. Some will delight her, and others will test the strength and mettle of her faith. Yet Vi knows that even when she faces the most difficult challenges of her life, God is faithful and loves her. Vi has a genuine, straightforward faith that is inspiring.

Part of the reason Vi's faith is active and sincere is because she spends time each day talking with God and reading her Bible. Vi loves God with all her heart. He is her very best friend and her favorite companion. She enjoys being a Christian!

Violet loves the Word of God, especially the promises of God. They are like anchors for her. Much of this love is due to the fact that she has been raised in a family that honors God and regularly discusses His Word. Vi’s parents love the Lord and seek His wisdom in all areas of life. They have taught Vi the ways of God since she was a child.

Despite this foundation of faith, Vi still has ups and down. At times she feels insecure (like most young girls), and she often struggles to understand God's mysterious ways. Vi wants her life to count for something; she longs to know God's unique plan for her, and has many questions.

Vi’s heart is always open to instruction, correction, and guidance. Vi regularly seeks the counsel and company of her godly mother and father, her grandparents, and even her older siblings.  Vi is quick to seek forgiveness when she has been wrong, which keeps her heart soft toward God's Spirit within her.

Vi is a very sensitive person. She really notices the world around her. She sees the beauty of nature and longs to paint it. She sees a sibling in need and lends a helping hand. As Vi grows up, she begins to see some of the injustice in society and wants to change it. Violet yearns to put her faith into action by helping and serving others. She recognizes that her family is blessed with wealth, and part of her journey is discovering how she is to put her abundant resources to work for God's Kingdom. One of Vi's favorite verses is James 2: 14-17, which says:

"What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

Vi is a determined young woman of faith who greets each new challenge and responsibility with the belief and trust that God is always by her side. The faith of this fictional character will inspire you!
