Laylie's Wardrobe

Laylie Colbert is a remarkable young girl. She is born into a life of slavery, but finds her way to true freedom—freedom of spirit and freedom of faith. Her journey requires little in the way of fashion, but the things that Laylie owns are really important to her. However, on the plantation and everywhere she goes, she is often given other things to wear, and any of the A Life of Faith clothing will fit her.

Presentation Dress
The Laylie doll comes dressed in a pretty pink cotton dress with lovely lace underwear. She is carrying her own little Bible. This is important to her, because she is not supposed to know how to read, but she has learned by listening to the Bible being read. Laylie’s pink dress is a gift from Millie Keith, who cut down her own favorite pink dress to make it fit Laylie.

Laylie has a deep-brimmed sunbonnet to protect her face and a sugar bag tote for keeping her own few belongings near her.

Work Necessities
Laylie is a house slave; she is therefore given work shoes and socks and an apron with a pocket.

Nightdress
Laylie sleeps in Millie’s room while Millie is visiting the plantation. Laylie has a soft muslin nightdress, a gingham bandana for her hair, and a soft knitted blanket to keep her warm.

Robin Hood Cape
Laylie loves the story of Robin Hood, because he is fighting the evil that hurts people. She plays Robin Hood and his Merry Men with the children in the slave quarters and tells them the story of Robin Hood and how he was trying to protect the people. Millie makes Laylie a Robin Hood cape out of her own green Christmas dress so that Laylie can pretend “for real.” For Laylie this is a treasured possession. She also has a deerskin hat with a feather in it to help her feel more like Robin Hood.
