Kathleen's Wardrobe

Kathleen McKenzie’s family is Scottish through and through. Her life is full of excitement, as Kathleen’s enthusiastic nature often gets her into interesting situations.  Kathleen’s story begins in 1929 and follows the events of the world and the events of her family during the tumultuous years of the early 1930s. Kathleen’s wardrobe reflects her ever-changing circumstances as her family must adapt to the economic conditions of the Great Depression. As a result, her lifestyle and her wardrobe take a dramatic turn when her family moves to their relative’s primitive farm in Ohio. Kathleen’s wardrobe goes from muslin and soft corduroy to work overalls and dresses and nighties made from farm feed sacks! Through it all, Kathleen never loses her spirit of adventure and her trust in God.

Lifestyle in the City

Party Time
The Kathleen doll comes clad in her presentation dress; a dress she might wear to an ice cream social at church or to a birthday party at a friend’s house. She has matching shoes, lace stockings, and pretty ribbons for her hair.

For Christmas, Kathleen receives a lavender silk dress. She loves wearing it and dons it for the most special of occasions.

School Days
Kathleen’s school dress is made of cotton corduroy, a very durable fabric, and comes with a pretty muslin blouse. Her school shoes are two-toned leather and she has printed cotton stockings to match her school attire. She is a girl dressed in style.

Scottish Heritage

On some school days and for special community events, Kathleen wears her Scottish kilt, complete with middy blouse and matching vest. She has black knickers to wear under her kilt, and a cozy red sweater she can wear with it as well. A tartan plaid can complete any of her outfits and spotlight her proud Scottish heritage.

Fun Things
Kathleen loves to bake blueberry pies, and she’s really good at it, too! She has her own apron and all that she needs from the kitchen to make her award-winning blue-ribbon pie. She even shares her family’s recipe.

Keeping Warm
A lovely red velvet coat with all the necessary accessories is one of the most elegant clothing items that Kathleen owns—and she loves when the weather cools off so she can wear it.

 Accessories
For church on Sunday, Kathleen has a lovely pale green straw hat and a very stylish pocketbook that matches her green shoes. Kathleen has a Scottish Sporran (a type of pocketbook) complete with her family crest on it; Scottish brogues (shoes that lace up) to wear with her kilt or knickers, and real running shoes for her races. For school days she often wears black cotton socks. For dressing up she has shiny purple shoes and lacy white socks. Her school bag is of brown leather and holds her writing book, sketch book, colored pencils, flash cards, and her history lessons. She has a hairbrush with bobby pins and rag curlers for curling her hair.

Life on the Farm

Barn work requires durable overalls; Kathleen has overalls and a shirt made from a feed sack to go with them. She often wears heavy cotton socks with her brogues when working out in the barn.

 Feed Sack Fashion
Kathleen is astonished when she realizes that her country relatives make their new dresses, nightgowns, shirts, and other necessities from the farm animal feed sacks! But when she visits Smith’s Feed and Seed store, she has so much fun rummaging through the colorful sacks to find just the right prints for her wardrobe. Her new Easter dress is made from a pretty pink, blue, and green feed sack; her nightgown is white with tiny purple flowers; and her favorite shirt is from a brown and green feed sack. Kathleen never dreamed that farm feed sacks could be so stylish!

 Accessories
A warm flannel quilt is one of the items that Kathleen values most at the farm. She loves to curl up under it to block away the chilly farmhouse drafts.

Every girl working on the farm has a sun bonnet to protect her pretty face from the fierce sunlight, as well as an apron to protect her clothes. Heavy cotton gloves and a watering can are necessities, too.

Undies and Such
Kathleen loves pretty underwear and her wardrobe contains some very nice pieces. She has a stylish, one-piece dotted Swiss slip; a set of purple undies with panties; camisole and petticoat; a pink camisole and tap pants that can also be worn as pajamas, and a really elegant tulle petticoat to fluff up her skirts.
